Abstract

The volume includes 15 chapters by a group of international scholars who work within an interdisciplinary theoretical frame. Their common focus is on ethnicity and race as represented by the media. Particular attention is given to new media, although some of the chapters also delve into the history of the politics of media representation.

The individual chapters argue for a non-essentializing view of identity politics in the media. Importantly, the plural mode of coexistence foregrounded in the volume does not intend to cancel identity as a concept, nor does it dispute the uniqueness of any one specific culture. Instead, it seeks to decolonize “being” and “being-with-one-another” from any ethnic, racial, or national foreclosure. As a result, rather than as fixed and stable, representations of racial and ethnic identities emerge as performative and transforming, thus empowering the members of their respective communities.
