Kindergartners Studying Trans* Issues Through I Am Jazz

Abstract

In a unique, relevant, and momentous lesson plan, Sullivan expertly weaves together the Queer Literacy Framework and early childhood pedagogical structured read aloud approaches with the children’s text I Am Jazz. Founded in the theoretical frameworks of Judith Butler and Michel Foucault, this Common Core aligned lesson utilizes the autobiography of a young transgender girl to instruct preschoolers and kindergartners about trans* youth. Via the integration of research-based vocabulary instruction techniques, including the incorporation of a character splash, students are drawn into Jazz’s compelling story. This social justice approach emphasizes inclusion in an interactive, rigorous, and student–centered manner. Preschool and elementary teachers, scholars, and pre-service teacher educators can utilize the pedagogical techniques presented with a variety of pertinent audiences.
