Abstract
This chapter serves as an introduction to the whole book. It begins with a very personal response to the UK referendum of June 2016 about leaving or remaining in the European Union. My highly emotional outpouring is both acknowledged and then questioned as to its validity and, thence, wisdom as suitable rejoinder to the political manoeuvrings which have taken place. This discussion is then contextualised within the broader arena of adult education’s potential for fostering critical intelligence in pursuit of democratic credibility.
The chapter then notes the paucity of theoretical responses to the question of wisdom’s place within the terrains of adult education. It introduces the methodological underpinning to the whole book, the use of autoethnography, and concludes with an outline of each succeeding chapter.
