Abstract
This chapter intends to address the impacts of local urban development by focusing on the human dignity of the inhabitants of the favelas of Rio de Janeiro. Rio de Janeiro has approximately 800 favelas scattered over the city that provide shelter for almost one and half million people (IBGE 2010). That is, about one out of every five residents of Rio de Janeiro lives in a favela. The conditions of life in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro can vary substantially, but it is not a misconception to say that in general these territories present severe deficiencies in the provision of basic services, such as water and electricity supplies, adequate sanitation, and regular garbage collection.
