Abstract
This chapter sets the scene by considering the context of higher education and universities, including the massive expansion of student numbers globally. It explores what we mean by education, which in this chapter (and the book as a whole) is counter to instrumental economy-facing conceptualizations. We look at how we can understand pedagogy and outline empirical examples of the work pedagogy can do, not all of it transformative. The aims of the book are then presented with an outline of each of the chapters which follow.
