Abstract
Part 1 offers a general introduction to the theoretical territory surrounding Performing Mountains. In it, the disciplinary framework of Mountain Studies is laid out and the sub-discipline of cultural geomorphology is used to illustrate the shaping hand of culture in relation to landscapes. The fertility of art dedicated to mountains is briefly surveyed alongside the international growth in mountain festivals as one outlet for such work. Mountain Studies’ constituent disciplines are placed alongside examples of Mountain Arts in order to consider more specifically the live arts of theatre and performance as significant, and under-appreciated, contributors to both fields. A case study of Yosemite valley concludes the chapter.
