Abstract

Critical intimate praxis is a method of queering the space of a classroom by subverting discourses around intimacy as inappropriate in “intellectual” spaces. By incorporating affective experience into classroom spaces and interactions and relying on explorations of those experiences as analytic lenses from which to view social relationships, students can view emotions and relationships as socially constructed, created through particular discursive means, and produced by historical and political contexts. This praxis asks both teachers and students to engage in queering the ways in which intimacy and vulnerability lead to both identity construction and social change through the practice of ethical relations.
