Abstract

The secretaries who were employed by the Nazis are introduced in this chapter, assessing who they were, what prompted them to work within the Nazi apparatus, and whether these women, who were responsible for typing the Nazi regime’s policies of persecution and extermination, were committed to the cause. This chapter focuses primarily on those women who were working for the Reichssicherheitshauptamt (RSHA) and considers what they knew about the Holocaust, and how they acquired this knowledge. Particular attention is paid to secretaries working for departments directly concerned with the facilitation of Nazi mass murder, which may have afforded the women an insight into the atrocities being committed.
