The Black Madonna and the Role of Women

  • Velma Maia Thomas
Part of the Black Religion/Womanist Thought/Social Justice book series (BRWT)

This book chapter examines the role of women in the Shrines of the Black Madonna. The historic unveiling of the black Madonna and child and the name of the church suggests the influential involvement of women. But have women had a prominent role? How is womanhood and motherhood experienced in this church? Did the church attempt to create a gender-neutral culture? Thomas allows women members of the church to speak for themselves through sharing their own experiences and struggles as women in the Black Christian Nationalist movement for over 20 years.
