Abstract

This chapter has a threefold purpose. First, it summarises the theories, methods and substantive issues which the preceding chapters in the Handbook identify as leading the field of textbook studies today. Second, again in close dialogue with the Handbook’s other chapters and their findings, it points to extant gaps in the research. Third, reflecting critically on the Handbook’s structural limitations, it identifies topics and issues to which future textbook research could devote itself beyond the foci presented in its chapters. The chapter concludes that textbook studies has evolved into an interdisciplinary field of research which has succeeded in applying, modifying and further developing theories and methods from the social sciences and cultural studies.
