Asian American Art for the People

Abstract

This chapter offers an overview of the work of Chinese American artist Nancy Hom, very active in political circles since the 1970s in the Bay Area. Drawing from an original interview, the author explores the way in which the 1960s politics, and the Asian American movement specifically, shaped Hom’s identification with Asian Americanness as an emerging political formation and radicalized community. New insights about the San Francisco scene, especially the Kearny Street Workshop and the legendary I-Hotel struggle, give a sense of the cross-pollination among artists, activists, feminists, Maoists, people of color and working-class immigrants of various Asian communities—a unique environment that gave strength to the Asian American movement in the Bay Area.
