The Value of Closed Captions and Teletext Subtitles for Language Learning

Abstract

At the Pavia conference in 2012, I used the opportunity to talk about the milestones in thirty years of caption research, the key findings of research into the benefits and principles of captioned viewing and the challenges we still face in promoting the use of captions in the new environment for language learning (Vanderplank, 2015). In this chapter, I continue to build my case for captions by going back to the start and revisiting the pioneering work of Karen Price and Anne Dow and my own Teletext 888 Project. So much research in the past ten to fifteen years has been largely confirmatory and has failed to build on early findings. I hope that by setting out this research, future work will be able to move forward to seek the answers to the many questions, which remain.
