Abstract

Careful examination of the holograph manuscript and the kinds of revisions, additions, and deletions that took place as Conrad took the serial form and radically revised it for novel publication reveal dramatic attempts to heighten the political implications of Conrad’s novel. The kinds of revisions that took place in the serialization, and then in the novelization are examined for their implications about the emerging final text. The changes are examined for the nuanced slight detail, the shifts in character depiction, and the sweeping structural changes that took place in Conrad’s reimagining of the text.
