The Anarchists in the House

Abstract

Conrad claimed that his depiction of anarchists in the novel was not to be taken seriously, and critical consensus tends to treat them as shams and grotesques. Careful examination of the figures shows them to be consistent with various historical stages of anarchism, from ideal abstraction to proponents of propaganda by word, the subsequent shift to propaganda by deed, and the figure of the political terrorist. Conrad may have treated his anarchists ironically, but they were representative types that show aspects of the political movement.
