Abstract

Norman Sherry’s valuable research on the sources of the Greenwich bombing has influenced generations of Conradian commentary, but some of the underlying assumptions—that Conrad researched his sources intensively where he was not drawing directly on memory or experience, and that where Conrad diverges from documentary source material he shows his conservative authorial bias—are challenged here with an examination of some of Sherry’s assumptions in The Set of Six short stories, focusing especially on “An Anarchist.”
