Ottoman Armenian Revolutionaries and the Dilemma of Deliverance through Violence

Why did the Armenian Revolutionary Federation (ARF) resort to an act of political violence that cost the lives of bystanders if their purpose was to raise awareness and sympathy for their cause? This contribution examines the seemingly contradictory logic of revolutionary groups such as the ARF in their deployment of terror in order to win the hearts and minds of an otherwise indifferent public. Considering that certain groups actually succeeded in attaining exactly that goal suggests that such tactics were not senseless, but very carefully and deliberately deployed. Their usefulness in attaining longer-term political goals, however, was highly questionable.
