Abstract

This chapter, explores the appearance of the actor—making an entrance—in the work of Kantor and Genet; but also as conceived of—with respect to a cultural anthropology of immaterial presence—by both Freud and Vernant, and—with respect to photography specifically—by both Barthes and Heidegger. How might the afterlife of the theatre of death be prefigured in the image of the death mask, when thinking about photographs, for example? How might the mirror be a prototype—rather than a metaphor—for thinking about the theatre of death?
