Racial Classification in a Changing Brazil
Chapter
Abstract
We start our exploration of race relations in Brazil by taking a close look at racial terminology: its internal logic, and how it has evolved throughout history. To provide context for this inquiry, I shall begin with a general overview of the socio-economic position of Afro-Brazilians in Brazil, particularly in Bahia. I shall also provide an analysis of how my research in Bahia sought to both build on and query the picture painted by statistics.
