Jewish-Muslim Understanding: A Matter of Education

In the face of growing concern over homegrown Islamic terrorism, marked by the recent disturbing congressional hearing into “the extent of radicalization in the American Muslim community”1 and the CNN documentary Unwelcome: The Muslims Next Door,2 I was not surprised to be invited to give a talk at Solomon Schechter Middle School, a Jewish school in Northbrook, Illinois. The invitation was actually initiated by my granddaughter, Hannah, who told me about the emotional debate in her class about whether or not Islam is a violent religion. I was delighted to meet the teacher and the students, who were all passionate about the subject. I found them to be extremely open and understanding.
