Abstract
When Singapore became an independent sovereign state in 1965, its GDP per capita was only USD 516 in nominal terms. By the time that Singapore celebrated its 50th birthday as an independent nation in 2015, its per capita GDP had reached USD 53,000. This placed Singapore above Japan in terms of per capita GDP. Singapore has established itself as the Asia-Pacific’s leading international financial centre, as well as a leading global shipping and commercial aviation hub.
