Conclusion: Post-Lisbon and British National Identity
Abstract
Europe, much like its borders, history, scope and roles, does not end with Lisbon. Indeed, a number of recent events make welcome additions to its evolving nature and to the fact that, as an issue, Europe continues to resonate with both political elites and with the citizens they supposedly serve. In order to bring this project up to date, three recent additions to the debates are examined albeit in brief. Naturally, there are others, although these are significant in that once again British identity is called into question. What is also notable is that these events continue to spiral; that is, past invocations of identity get played out in the present. This chapter concludes with a recapitulation of the main arguments of the book.
