Abstract

Brookfield stands apart. It was the Group moment. During the rest of the decade as the company was forced to jump-start itself again and again, the first summer survived as their ideal alternative community, an American utopia. Their collective experience had given new meaning to what it was to be an actor, laying down basic principles and cementing personal bonds that would guide them through many upheavals. The 12 weeks of rehearsal could also boast another very important achievement: the debut of Lee Strasberg as a director on Broadway and the Group’s redefinition of the idea of the director.
