Improving Governance Arrangements for Academic Entrepreneurship
Abstract
The global economic crisis has led to a number of important paradigm shifts. One of these shifts is the growing recognition that entrepreneurship and innovation is an important part of developing a stable and resilient economy (Schramm 2006). The United States, in particular, has seen a surge in public policy makers who view entrepreneurs as critical players in economic growth efforts. Ironically, this comes at a time when public resources are scarce and, thus, financial and other resource support for entrepreneurs is waning. On the positive side, this has led to greater collaboration and resource pooling between public and private sector entities. One example of such collaboration is the relationships being formed between universities and entrepreneurs. University-entrepreneur collaborations fall under the umbrella concept of academic entrepreneurship, which refers to the ‘efforts and activities that universities and their industry partners undertake in hopes of commercializing faculty research’ (Wood 2011, 153).
