Abstract
There are several reasons why the making of Michelangelo Buonarroti’s ‘David’ is considered as one of the greatest achievements in human history. It is, of course, first and foremost because of the astonishing result – one of the best known sculptures in the world, often and sometimes stereotypically used as a symbol of the Renaissance. No matter how many times the statue may have been seen by the visitor in photographs, the encounter with it, at the Galleria dell’Accademia in Florence, is without exception a humbling and cathartic experience.
