Preparing for a Future without Franco (mid-1973 to 1975)

Abstract

What has always filled churchmen with panic is that someone should actually dare to put the social dimension of the gospel into practice with all its implications. And panic is induced by the possible contamination of marxism which this practice might entail. Hence the never-ending calls for prudence and moderation when social problems are being judged. ‘The Church has in the past yielded frequently to the temptation of the middle course. It has reined back evangelical radicalism so as to make it possible for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle. It has invented … the dwarf camel’.1
