Abstract

First published in Venice, Thomasso Buoni’s book of inquiries into beauty, speculates about the influence of climate, diet, the heavens, and the imagination on outward appearances. His claim that “every like desireth and loveth his like” anticipates arguments made two centuries later by Joseph Arthur, Comte de Gobineau, for the permanence of racial types on the basis of affinities and repulsions.61
