Abstract
In all of the figures and texts examined here, professional practice and professional institutions have been seen as loci of the tension between idealist and materialist rationalities. Whether those tensions are imaginatively resolved or clumsily patched up, they have always been present in such a way as to attract attention to the necessary cultural work of understanding professionalism in terms of its conflicting allegiances.
