Abstract

As the dust settles from the 2008 Olympics, with Chinese athletes collecting numerous medals, the basic question re-emerges of what medals China is set to collect in the international system for the coming century? Will it be a secondary silver-medal position behind a continuing American gold? Or will it be Chinese gold emerging for the century, with the US slipping from gold to silver, ‘behind’ China. Such game metaphors can be pursued with vigour. A new ‘Great Game’ for one?
