Abstract

Many of the people we interviewed spoke fondly of their formative years in the industry. Once in, there is a clear and very structured career development path. If you are a trader or broker, you usually start as an assistant or cold calling, both offering little pay. Large firms put you through a rigorous training programme. If you are a research analyst you start typically in a junior associate role, graduate first to associate and then to analyst. The apex is senior analyst. In investment banking you start as an analyst, move on to associate and then become a banker.
