Conclusions

Abstract

The issue of Muslims in prison was not high on the public agenda when we began to plan the research on which this book is based. Neither in France nor in Britain were politicians, journalists or academics asking questions about the treatment of Muslims in prison. There was certainly concern about the issue among prison chaplains in England and Wales, but its significance for the rest of British society was low in most people’s opinion. Even among Muslim organisations and in the Muslim press in the UK, only a small group of campaigners was actively seeking to raise awareness about Muslim prisoners. The situation in France was even clearer: public concern with Muslims being held in French prisons was virtually non-existent.
