Abstract

The Vicaría represented the institutionalisation of moral opposition to the Pinochet regime as led by the Catholic Church. The reasons why such an institution was possible lie in the nature of the Chilean Church, its importance in Chilean society and, equally, in the nature of the regime itself and how it saw its own role.
