Abstract

This section will present the linguistic perspective(s)52 on standardization and the function of standard languages. Chapter 1 was primarily concerned with arguments against the standard from outside the discipline of linguistics. Here, I shall consider, in a sense, what standard languages do in real situations where they function as standards in the face of strong theoretical ‘proofs’ against their viability and fairness.
