Abstract
So far in this book I have focused on theoretical issues which problematize the mature, gendered dancer’s body, drawing on relevant literature. However, theory is best when informed by evidence, and in this case the informants with whom I conducted life-history interviews between 2000 and 2004 were currently in employment in Australia, India, Ireland, the Netherlands and Germany. In this chapter, their voices are featured and ‘give life’ to theory. Out of these interviews 11 recurrent themes emerged, which are briefly outlined below:
