Abstract

Of the more than 50 countries in the world that currently have a semipresidential constitution (see Chapter 1 for a complete list), over one-third (23) are found on the African continent. Of the 53 member countries in the African Union, more than half (27) currently are or recently were semipresidential (Table 8.1). Although semi-presidentialism has been particularly prevalent in Francophone and Lusophone Africa, the list also includes Anglophone and Arabic speaking countries
