Abstract

Europe’s longest bridge opened this year. It straddles the Öresund, a 16-kilometre stretch of water that divides southern Sweden from Denmark. The new road and rail link will make a big impact on the regional economy, of that there can be little doubt, but the significance of the Öresund Bridge goes far beyond the benefits to Copenhagen and Malmö. For this £1 – 85 billion project is just the latest in a succession of macro-engineering projects that together are revolutionizing the European transport network.
