Abstract

Key Historical Events. Turkey became a republic on 29 Oct. 1923. (For the transition from the Ottoman Empire see The Statesman’s Year-Book, 1991–92, p. 1210). Religious courts were abolished in 1924, Islam ceased to be the official state religion in 1928, women were given the franchise and western-style surnames were adopted in 1934.
