HISTORY. The country formed part of the Holy Roman Empire until it was conquered by Napoleon. In 1815 it was joined by a personal union of the crown to the Netherlands (the king of the Netherlands was also the Duke of Luxembourg). In 1890 Luxembourg became independent under a Grand Duke.
