On 3 Dec. 1971 India entered a state of war with Pakistan, following 9 months of increasing difficulties over the proclamation of East Pakistan’s independence, the suppression of the independence movement by Pakistani forces and the flow of East Pakistani refugees into India. India had expressed sympathy for East Pakistan in March 1971 and demanded an end to military intervention by West Pakistan.
