Abstract

In 1863 Chile had a population of 1,676,243 (census 1862). National development was being consolidated under presidents Miguel Montt (1851 – 61) and José Joaquín Pérez (1861–71). In 1863 the Santiago-Valparaiso railway, built by British and USA capital, opened; a sound scheme of national education was initiated by Diego Barros Arana as head of the Instituto Nacional, and the first official modern fire-brigade was established in Santiago with British assistance.
