Abstract
Virtually every college and university, large or small, private or public, has some type of “Vision Document” or “Mission Statement,” an official invocation of the institutions basic purposes and aspirations. Cited in practically all of them is a more or less standard triad of faculty activities: Teaching, Scholarship, and Service. While the first two categories are presumed to be self-explanatory, “Service” becomes the catch-all term designating everything else that cannot be subsumed readily under the first two rubrics. It likewise is represented as an integral dimension or component of the institution’s overall mission.1
