Abstract
In this chapter, aspects of the speech code within the community studied that indicate culturally distinctive understandings of social relations are examined. The data builds a multifaceted picture of what the respondents had to say about the following areas of social relations: the different roles for science and industry in society at large, the different roles for basic and applied research, and the role of the media and education in public understanding about science.
