Chapter
Part of the Crossing Boundaries of Gender and Politics in the Global South book series (CBGPGS)

Abstract

The chapter argues that electoral judging with a gender perspective has been determinant to the proper application and enforcement of quota laws in Mexico. It argues that the expansion of Mexican women’s rights and their political opportunities to run for legislative seats throughout the country was limited by political parties’ creative interpretation of the quota law. Moreover, the chapter highlights the usefulness of the measure called control de convencionalidad (the control of conventionality), which allowed for the application of international conventions on human rights within national norms.
