Abstract

This chapter focuses on President Kabbah’s government in exile after the Armed Forces Revolutionary Council (AFRC) headed by Major Johnny Paul Koroma overthrew him. It centers on both regional and international efforts to reinstate President Kabbah. This chapter also covers United Nations’ involvement in the conflict and the official participation of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) through its peacekeeping force, ECOMOG. It includes ECOMOG invasion of Freetown in 1998 to reinstate President Kabbah and the return of the president. It also covers the military and civilian tribunals established to try those involved in the AFRC coup.
