Sightings of Comic Dexterity

Abstract

Comic performance outside the usual parameters of a theatre frame can provide interesting instances for analysis of joking interaction, especially for those looking to identify its elusive ingredients in public contexts. This short, personal chapter on the distinctive circumstances of an international conference of humour scholars and practitioners reflects upon its opening and closing performances—the welcome by Little John Nee and a closing keynote by Pauline McLynn. The piece proposes as the secret attribute of virtuosic comic improvisers a mercurial ability to negotiate on-the-spot decisions in response to audience reaction, which may well be more important to sustaining a current of laughter than any of the actual jokes.
