Politics and Pilgrimage

Part of the The New Middle Ages book series (TNMA)

The final chapter moves away from discussing popular engagement with pilgrimage in Wales, or from Wales to overseas sites, to look at the role of pilgrimage in Anglo-Welsh relations. It looks at the pilgrimage of a number of England’s kings to sites in Wales, notably St Davids and St Winifred’s Well, and argues that these were not the politicised events they are often made out to be. It also looks at the degree to which the Welsh engaged with pilgrimage to the ‘political’ saints of later medieval England, as well as the potential for developing pilgrimage centres around popularly venerated individuals in Wales.
