Abstract

The history of Vietnam can be traced to the beginning of the Christian era. Conquered by the Chinese in b.c. 111, it broke free of Chinese domination in 939, though at many subsequent periods it was a nominal Chinese vassal. (For subsequent history until the cessation of hostilities with France at the Geneva Conference of July 1954 see The Statesman‘s Year-Book, 1985–86).
