Abstract

An agreement on the future status of the Saar territory was signed by France and the German Federal Republic on 23 Oct., 1954; it had, however, not been ratified by 30 April, 1955. The main clauses provide for the maintenance of the economic and customs union with France and for internal autonomy of the Saarland. A European Commissioner is to act on behalf of the Saar in its foreign relations. For the agreements signed by France and Saarland on 20 Mav, 1953, see The Statesman’s Year-Book, 1954, pp. 1349–50.
