Abstract
Chaesung Chun cautions against realism’s pessimism when more optimistic outcomes of US-China rivalry are possible. South Korea needs to use middle power diplomacy together with ASEAN, Taiwan, Australia, and Japan to introduce norm-governed and multilevel engagement in East Asia. It also needs to adjust its bilateral relations with China and the USA to reflect new economic and strategic realities.
