Abstract
In the Standard Model and in all theories with gauge unification, the CKM matrix originates from the fact that the mass matrices of the up and down quarks do not commute (see (2.26)). This means that there is no basis in family space where both matrices are diagonal. The CKM matrix emerges, from this point of view, as the rotation between the two eigenbases of the up and down mass matrices.
