Abstract
Mathematical hydrodynamic models of continental seas have been extensively developed and have now reached a high degree of accuracy. Then can assist management by
-
i)
forecasting sea levels and currents due to tides and storm surges,
-
ii)
determining local secondary circulations which affect the distribution of nutrients and pollutants and often create distinct ecological boxes,
-
iii)
predicting the dispersion, sedimentation - and eventual recirculation by strong turbulence - of suspended material as well as the final deposition of sediments on the bottom,
-
iv)
assessing the extent of the damage produced by a given coastal or off-shore release and appreciating the opportunity of authorizing or penalizing sea dumpings,
-
v)
providing the bases for interdisciplinary studies of the marine system and, as such, paving the way for the general comprehensive ecosystems models which are required for the study, monitoring and control of marine pollution.
